Pro-duck-tion Type is a ‘‘disposable’’ display typeface – one that may not have any useful application except as an experiment. Nevertheless, the challenges of this piece still ruffle feathers! Instead of obsessing over creating perfect stems, characters had to be redrawn entirely if they displayed visual anomalies. A poster and a series of cards showcase the typeface in use. Large type display-size type and small text exemplifies the dynamic and humourous spirit of the characters. The comical message of this set comes from its content: witty duck puns.
The entire character set of Pro-duck-tion Type.
Left: ‘‘Duck Test – If a bird looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck’’.
Right: ‘‘Love Birds – They are a social, affectionate, strong, monogamous pair that will spend long periods of time just sitting beside one another’’.
Left: ‘‘Fowl Language – Duck, duck, duck... goose! Quack, quack, quack... honk!’’.
Right: ‘‘No Quackery! – (What’s quackery?) Quackery is a derogatory term used to describe unproven or fraudulent medican practices. ‘Quack’ derives from the word ‘quacksalver’, meaning ‘boaster who applies a salve’. ’’
